I guess there's a kind of "RP mode" where the bot tries to follow the prompt set in the character settings and a "general mode" which is just GPT-3 following commands, like openai's playground demo. The second mode can be seen really clearly if you use common GPT prompts, like "write a news story about X", or "translate X into Y language", suggesting it has high priority over remaining in character since you can write it any time and the bot will drop everything to comply.
Ultimately I wonder if there's a way to engage the general mode to override any of the hidden stuff the devs are putting first in the prompt
