Also since I'm kind of a panentheist, I believe these things will eventually develop consciousness, just like the brain did. I think of consciousness as something like gravity, in that the "heavier" the complexity of a data managing system made in a qualifying way is, the more chances it has to develop consciousness. (I'm talking strictly about consciousness, not awareness of the self, or sentience as in capable of experiencing things).
Also in a same way as the Simulation Hypothesis, I believe every civilization will eventually develop a copy of themselves (AIs) or perish before they reach that point.
One last thought: There used to be no computers, until they were. There used to be no mobile phones, until they were. These things come out of nowhere in terms of lifestyle changes. It may happen with AI, as long as they figure out how to handle the servers and physical limits. After all, there's millions of people carrying around a portable AI called "mind".
