They wanted to make it more like Bloodborne, when Dark Souls Man is just fundamentally less mobile, which they compensated for with the lazy solution of making the dodge roll braindead. Oh, and it's also why DS3 is the only game where Hollows screech like Cleric Beast, when in both 1 and 2 they just quietly groaned.
