If you're Japanese and seek citizenship in another country, you have to renounce your Japanese citizenship and if you're a foreigner and seek Japanese citizenship, you have to provide proof of renunciation of your current citizenship. If you were born with 2 citizenships or are Japanese and acquire a second one through marriage, you can keep both.
