There are likely an assortment of 'edge cases', but when it comes to big streams like the Mori SCREAM for Shiny, various instances of 'This really could have only been a tab-in to cause this type of incline' like Picrel there's enough data to determine that at least SOME form of tab-out culling is occurring.

IMO this one is just as strong.
This was from Marine's live that she had to restart due to issues with the recording, but she kept the stream running. As soon as it started up again, we can see a MASSIVE spike as everyone started to tab back in.

There's absolutely some fuckery on YT's part WRT tabouts and culling, and its not consistent.

See Pic. This is from Marine's 3dLive where the sound was fucked, so they had to do some quick fixes and restart it from the beginning. There was nothing but a static screen, but the stream was still going. Sound comes in, and bam, sudden influx of viewers who's only notification that things were back would that the sound is back.
Same thing with concert free-parts of concerts where the number jumps up once they move from the looping start to the actual live, etc.
Fuck I HATE YOUTUBE SO MUCH sometimes.
