Reminder Japan governed Southern Taiwan longer than China ever did.
China only started attempting to gain control of Southern Taiwan in 1875, and succeeded in 1885. They lost it to Japan in 1895, and Japan held it until 1945.
China only ever governed Southern Taiwan at most 24 years if you include the decade the Qing were trying to gain control of it and the 4 years of the Chinese Civil War, while Japan governed it double that at 50 years.
