The proper way to do this story was to have you play as both of them, then have them come together in some huge fight, make you question if Joel did the right thing, instead Abby doesn't just kill Joel, she fucking tortures him practically, after Joel saved her life mind you.
This made Abby a character that cannot be redeemed in any form, it doesn't help that the game has Abby go on a Joel like journey complete with a kid, its fucking stupid.
There's a reason speedrunners invented a good end% category, it involves playing till the first Abby segment then tossing yourself off a cliff.
