>>107745914I agree that the obligatory genre constraint makes the music more soulless, but that doesn't apply to everyone or every song. Part of the issue is a lack of professionalism or talent in actually producing the song, or maybe too much professionalism. The flavor and creativity generally isn't there, but what's specifically lacking is a major emotional moment that keeps you repeating the song and that you can remember long-term. Your work can sound like total shit as long as you nail this one thing. That sort of unquantifiable taste consideration comes from practicing and iterating on the song for a long time (or your box of old scrapped ideas), but the teams working on these are short-term contractors who can only do the bare minimum to flesh it out up to a "good" standard.
Lumi and Rie having made so much more than everyone else have a natural advantage for this because they'll have a better sense of their strengths and which parts of previous projects were actually good and worth repeating. The retarded brainrot shit they produce is a good sign that they are taking pure enjoyment more seriously than the form the song takes, and if they continue for many more years, they will inevitably reach a higher standard than "vtuber music." Honestly, they already have. I think Forever is a good proof of concept, regardless of the fact it's a generic Lumi song, because the last lines were very memorable to me and sometimes I have to listen to it again just for them.

Talent or not though, it reaches the bar for what I would consider a real song.
