I enjoyed watching Sonny's Rain World stream today! I've been curious about how this stream would go ever since I saw it on his schedule - it's a gorgeous, beautifully-crafted game, but it's challenging in a way that's quite different from the games he's struggled with before.
Take Luna Nights, for example. It's difficult, but it's straightforward about it. You know you have to beat the next boss to progress. You know what patterns the boss has and every attack is clearly televised; if you die, it's purely your fault. In Rain World, you're told to eat and sleep and left on your own. You don't really know what you're supposed to do, and sometimes you're stuck in situations where all you can do is die. It absolutely nails being an exploration game, but it punishes you for exploring and dying so you've got to figure things out fast or you'll be stuck doing the same things over and over again. While Sonny isn't completely hopeless, he's also not the fastest at picking things up since he can get pretty stubborn or oblivious about things. That makes the game troublesome to stream, since you really start feeling the lack of progress when there's an audience watching you blunder through and die in the same spots over and over again.
That being said, I did enjoy the stream. There were a few issues that bothered me - I think his game audio was off most of the time? - but it was a comfortable stream with a beautiful game and there's something strangely wholesome about watching someone just try to figure out what's going on behind its very opaque exterior. I'm glad he decided to stream it.
Thanks for listening to my TED talk. I think I'd rather die than watch Valorant again, but that's not an option so I'll just sleep instead. Good night!
