They just want people near them so they can feel a part of a group or so they can show off to others later with how popular or interesting they are.
I would rather not contribute to this narcissism, even online with the whole "mutual friends" thing steam has. It's all so tiresome, none of those people ever wanted to hang out for real or be real friends.
