In light of recent news, did anyone else who started watching western vtubers after years of primarily watching streams that emulate the japanese or idol model grow a lot more cynical about said model after switching over?
I think someone who liked it enough would always be able to tell that there would be issues inherent to the model for the individuals you were watching, but I still loved what the model ended up facilitating, which is personalities that I normally wouldn't get to see, big group friendships I could feel nice watching, and also the specific ways you got to watch them grow and flourish. Joy from someone you like succeeding isnt unique to this but I found that the individuals who really wanted to be in japanese corpos, whether they were japanese or not, were often very good at framing the whole experience including the struggles in a specific kind of twee optimism and sentimentality that I found intoxicating. That narrativization made the whole thing feel really special, especially when something big happened. It's a very "santa is real" innocent joy to experience. For a year and a half or so I've been unable to feel invested in any of this and instead just see the company and the media experience it wants you to have instead of the magic I want to see, helped by watching what feels like half of the people who felt like I did lose their minds over the course of the last few years. I'm not too torn up about any of it anymore but I do miss having something like that in my life. It's probably for the best to grow out of it.
