So, the other day I was watching clips for JOPs, one of the ever-popular series of "kaigai member talks about life in Japan". In particular it was Raora giving out out advice on dos and donts in Japan. And she yet again mentioned how there's no fucking trash bins in Japan whatsoever, and you have to carry your trash home, where you're expected to have your own trash compactor.
And I always wondered about this mysterious lack of trash bins. Because it obviously doesn't solve littering, if anything it makes it worse. Because you can't expect assholes to carry their trash around for hours, like civilized people would. But there's at least a chance they'd throw it in a bin. IF there was one around.
Anyway, I think I might have solved this mystery. In the comments sections the japs were talking about it, and from what little I could understand, they kept mentioning Aum Shinrikyo. So, I assume the lack of trash bins is not due to some "Japanese culture" differences. It's supposedly an anti-terrorist security measure, so there wouldn't be as many inconspicuous places to hide a bomb or something in.
