I don't think one ever really need numbers in worldbuilding, really. My view is that the numbers are whatever they need to be such that the creator's vision comes to life, that why it's more about figuring out if something is within the realm of plausibility instead of working it out into granular detail. It's smarter creatively too, as this way it's more flexible and easier to adjust to later developments.

Well, I guess for some things it's useful to have an idea of the order of magnitude of stuff. A 10 meter mecha is very different from a 100 meter mecha.
