I'm also open to the idea that each one got hit in the back of the head with a brick and required seventeen stitches and when they finally recovered could never spell properly again. Then their parents recognized that they were going to be stupid for the rest of their lives and so dropped them off at an orphanage and just had another child that they ended up being much more happy with.
