Just have the Lexicarnum wiki (NOT the 40k wiki) open to read up on unfamiliar terms or things as you go. Then just link hop on there reading up on whatever sounds interesting to you.
If you don't have a particular faction in mind, maybe start with Eisenhorn books- it gives a pretty ground level view of the imperium that's about an Inquisitor going around and sluething out hertics and shit. It's fun, and it's not just the usual grim dark battles all the time.
