It was way better than the very first thread that was made after the name leak (yes, because if you weren't around by the very start of the general, /ope/ is actually the oldest Advent general thread by accident). It was called /chirp/ which was a really shitty first name and the first thread itself wasn't all that great because it was infested by catalog-niggers and then it became /caw/ by the second thread which wasn't great either because it was also filled by bait. /caw/ sticked for a while then by the end of the debut stream, The general with the names that was proposed in the other /caw/ threads - there was things like /nrg/, /𝄞/, /jail/ or outright maintaining /caw/. /ope/ won by a very wide margin because it was something that sticked and the explanation at the end of the debut stream also helped.
