Like the Mortal Kombat artists have tons of reference material to IRL gore like animals in slaughter houses, The Last of Us 2's devs apparently used gore videos as reference material which is why the gore in that game is incredible
and why the corpses/death rattles have a really uncanny behavior to them to them, , its more "rarer" I suppose for a studio to be like the Dead Island 2 devs and base their gore off of regular theatrical films like the Acid Man in Robocop or campier zombie films where they're basically balloons of red stuff.
