It does a great job of building character early on in a growing child.
There were those other guys at school that you didn't much care for because everyone was put into cliques and hierarchies without really any thought. It just happens.
Then at some point everyday after school some of us start playing road hockey together and a few more people join in and there's this sense of camaraderie between kids that would've never got along putting differences aside, asshole bantering with each other, rooting for each other, just for an intense game of road hockey... Then a car comes... everyone pulls aside and awkwardly waits... And then repeat. That just sticks with you forever.
I make it sound more grandiose than it is, but this was an important experience.
