Vtubing to me lives or dies depending on how direct and natural it seems. Sure, it's okay to sell merch, do cons and all that as long as the amateur spirit, the scuff, the personal and even parasocial component that goes both ways is there and the relationship between the indie/corpo and the fans is direct and unobstructed. If Hololive goes full corpo there's just no reason to watch their girls because it all amounts to a complete fabrication, it becomes soulless.
Pay heed Sakana, pay heed indies. This may be what makes or breaks (you). Once the amateur spirit and elan is gone everything goes with it. Place yourself in a lowly position and nobody will find fault with you, try to be a "real professional" and everything will slip through your fingers. You'll become artificial, conceited, unnatural. There's hundreds of thousands of Mickey Mice, Star Wars, and every other franchise and IP. And they're all completely worthless and odious. Just like how anime lost its soul once it went global vtubing may be destroying itself in the same way, but not all is lost is small corpos and indies pick up the slack and stay true to the original premises, and the original premise of vtubing can be described as what it is - a niche otaku interest for hardcore fans.
Let's just wait for Fauna's stream and see what happens. It may be something else entirely. In any case it's important to remind ourselves that we (and others from other corpos and indie fans) stuck with our girls for reasons that have nothing to do with corporations, charts, investors or retarded culture wars and similar bullshit. Vtubing, real vtubing, is outside such things. Phase could become truly great if it sticks with the initial premise of vtubing and doesn't budge, but for that to happen Sakana would have to be truly one of a kind. We'll get to see how it all ends one way or the other so let's just hope for the best.
