>long ago there were a bunch of magical rings that granted great power and were handed out to the rulers of elves men and dwarves but secretly, this dickhead named Sauron made another ring that gave him great power as well as dominion over the other rings and their bearers to some extent>Sauron amasses a great army and the elves and men of middle earth last stand battle him>he is defeated and the ring is taken but it corrupts the human king and eventually the ring is lost>ring gets picked up by a creature named smeagol, later called gollum, that is corrupted by it over many years and deformed, gollum loses the ring but it is found by a hobbit named Bilbo(small human) during an unrelated adventure with Gandalf (a wizard) and a company of dwarves trying to retake the dwarven ancestral home from the dragon Smaug (events of the hobbit)>years passed, Bilbo's birthday in The Shire, peaceful farmlands and home of the hobbits>Gandalf discovers that Bilbo is in possession of the big bad ring (which grants invisibility when used by normal folk) and puts his relative, Frodo, and his gardener, Sam, to the task of taking the ring somewhere safe and far away>they pick up companions along the way including Merry and Pippin (fellow hobbits), Aragorn (human heir to one of the human kingdoms and descendant of the human king from earlier), Boromir (human son of the steward of the same human kingdom), Legolas, an elf prince, Gimli, son of one of the dwarves in the company from 'The Hobbit', and Gandalf (old wizard bitch) himself. >Gandalf's wizard bro Saruman defects to the side of the dark lord Sauron and helps him regain his strength and army>The party have a council at the elf city and decide to make a last ditch effort to destroy the ring by taking it to the place it was created and destroying it there (Mount Doom, in Mordor)>They set off, being chased and attacked by the forces of Sauron, including the wraiths of the human kings that were given rings and orcs.>they get sweet gifts from the elf GILF Galadriel at some point, including elvish bread rations, magical elvish rope, magic cloaks, and a phial of starlight>gandalf is seemingly killed during a climactic battle with a demonic creature while passing through the ruins of the dwarven kingdom (You shall not /cannot pass!)>boromir is tempted by the power of the ring and attempts to take it from frodo but regrets his actions and dies defending the other hobbits from orcs>the party is split up as Merry and Pippin are taken by the orcs to Saruman, Aragorn and Legolas and Gimli give chase.
