Objectively speaking, difficulty of learning English comes from the modern vocabulary, since you run the risk of sounding a bit pretentious and awkward if you talk "by the book". Learning ins and outs of the language itself is pretty easy in comparison.
Granted, conversational Japanese is not really that hard to learn either, there's just way less Jap things in the world that you can be exposed in your day-to-day, which slows down the learning process a bit.
Basically neither EN or JP are going to learn a new language to talk to their coworkers easier.
