Rather than just bitch, I'll be productive, here's a primer. Pick one font, use dark saturated hues, give it a 10-20% outline in the same hue but very light, and give it a 20-50% black text shadow offset down and to the right
If you're going to mess with any of this advice, mess with the latter stuff before the earlier stuff
