In japan, you can go basically anywhere at any time because the public transportation is that good, including small towns and whatnot. Unless you specifically want to go to the top of the mountains at 3AM or some other bullshit, of course. Source: been there.
If you mean driving road trip, I see the appeal of being totally free and unbothered, but in europe you can literally drive through countries inside the schengen area without any troubles, and there's much more to see because you're actually changing countries. Source: european, also did some stupid shit like same day drives through croatia -> italy -> slovenia -> croatia.
I still haven't been to the states but i've heard so much praise of the "freedom" you have in the states that i'm genuinely curious about what's different / better there.
