As someone that has worked in both a Korean and Japanese company (kill me, never again) this is 100% within their corporate culture.
You can have a genuinely fantastic company with fantastic people, but then one shitty manager. And your first reaction might be
>"Well then why not just get rid of that bad manager?"
And congratulations, you're a westerner using western logic. But that's not Jap culture. It's not socially acceptable to do reasonable shit like just sit that manager down and have a conversation about expectations and their actions going forward.
Instead everyone just kind of pretends nothings is wrong because its not socially acceptable to address "the problem" whatever it is. And everyone, even close friends, has this desire for the people suffering or being overworked to just do their best and deal with it, and pretend everything is fine.
It is genuinely image over everything. It's also why a lot of the JP girls have made comments being confused and not understanding. To them saying "disagreements with management" isn't just addressing that one situation, it's attacking the company as a whole. And there is also a language barrier between them. So they genuinely might not fully know whats going on, and they can't rectify the disconnect between
>"I love this company and I have good experiences"
>"I don't like bad thing being said about what I like"
There is no way to resolve this, it's a genuine cultural clash issue that persists even outside Japan whenever asian companies interact with westerners.
