If that's all there was to it then she didn't need to be so nervous about bringing it up, since the religion aspect wasn't really that important to the story. And if everyone else in the class also said that it was weird then it clearly wasn't just a quick comment, it seems like it sparked a whole discussion where the teacher could've said more weird shit.
That being said, if it really was just that then I still wouldn't blame her for dropping the class. I wouldn't if I was in her shoes, but if she's less willing to put up with bad teachers than I am then more power to her.
