when console FPS games starting to become mainstream, FPS games have been designed to be more approachable and accessible to more players. (this would be around the time of COD 3, COD 4 or so?)
i'm not that much of a purist but i play along sometimes calling them "real FPS" contrasting them with the more casual offerings of today (new CODs, overwatch, apex, etc)
they had their time and there's just not much money for them anymore in the current market.
see: Unreal Tournament is out there and even crowdsourced but nobody cares, epic is making more money licensing their game engine and selling fortnite shit
still though i appreciate the cultural impact "real FPS" games left, even today watching high level play of games like Quake is still such a treat
