In Soma the scientists make copies of themselves to put on the ark, then afterwards shoot themselves in the head (the reasoning isn't that they did it for self preservation of the human race or anything, they actually legitimately believed that by shooting themselves after making a copy, that their mind would be "transferred".) There was no justification done to explain why they would ever think this made any sense. It's just fucking ridiculous.
