I'm not saying every character needs to be relatable but guts isn't engaging if you don't self insert as him. I won't lie a decent amount of my hatred comes from the rabid fanbase though, it's babby's first grimdark manga with about as much narrative depth as Re:zero and yet people treat it like it's Monster which I also don't like that much but I can appreciate how much better written it is than berserk. Plus the art in the Berserk manga is only good in the beginning, Miura got caught in his own ass at a certain point and pages become unreadably overworked and the composition and flow of paneling suffers immensely. Fire Punch is a more engaging story about struggling, Tsugumomo has better action and paneling, Spirit Circle crams 5X more emotion into 1/10th the pagecount, etc. There are better examples everywhere of things berserk is constantly praised for by people who have read only Berserk and so they point at everything else and say "wow this reminds me of Berserk" like shut up.
