Cult shit aside (and it is very often a cult), the main takeaway is that working out affects your limbic system, hormones, etc. Being physically healthy is a plus too but for the purposes of this conversation the benefits to the mind are quite a lot.
There is no spiritual mumbo jumbo involved, just pure physics. Your body is a machine, and your brain isn't separate from it. You get what you give.
