You know how trashy people get random kanji tattoos? Japanese wear clothes with random english phrases.
You know how Americans toss in random lingo from other culture's language and religions (most notably Latin, Roman, Greek, and Norse) to sound cool? That is EXACLY what the Japanese are doing whenever you see an anime that has heavy Christian iconography.
They just think it looks neat.
I'm partially inclined it is mainly due to human nature and curiosity rather than purely being buck broken, but that has its merits as well.
