That's literally souls, in the theological sense. The entire universe for all of time is a giant CPU, and it's totally invisible because it's disguised as random particle interactions, and this CPU is only used to run consciousness computations? That's literally God - He is all of existence, He does not exist, and He cares specifically about our souls. The copies in the simulation live forever in a perfect world, and the protagonist goes there when he dies? Literally Heaven. And so on. He took their assumptions and through just logical deduction, basically re-invented the meme Christianity that atheists hate, complete with invisible but all-powerful God who will let you into Heaven if you believe in him.
