It was expected for 2d Vtubers to be normal streamers with avatars for normalfags, thats what nijisanji was, and hololive was a "copy" but with "worse performers" because they were "faking", by "pretending to be anime girls fr" instead of being like nijisanji with normal humans using an avatar
Back then it was easy to find info of the performers so, in fact, they were all normal people in terms of grass touching skills and relationships
Hololive had some autistics but they were all normal camwhores already
As the hobby got bigger, it lured evil schizos and, for security, the performers had to adopt a more anonymous approach, and thus the discussion about their personal lives became a taboo
The "unicorn" shit in the sense of "WOW THEY STREAM WITH MALES *cancels menshi*" and "DONT CARE IF MARRIED AS LONG ITS NOT ON STREAM", was already real even before the performers became vtubers but it got stronger when the taboo took effect
