>>42321733You live in a city with high walls. For generations the walls protect you: from the elements, from animals, from each other. Then, in a fit, you tear down the walls. You want to see the countryside. The walls cast long shadows and make it cold in the morning. It is inconvenient to go through gates. So you tear down the walls.
Immediately, there are benefits.
You can see the splendor of the country around you. You can come and go wherever you want, from any point in the city. You see sunrises and there are no long shadows to make the morning chill. Things are good for a time.
Then the windy season comes, and you are no longer protected. Then the animals realize that there is nothing keeping them out, and you suffer predation. Thieves and murderers see they can enter into any home they wish, as there is no wall, no gate, and no gatekeepers to deter them. Your neighbors see you are unprotected, they see your prosperity, and they grow ambitious.
The wall, the thing that protected generations of your people and allowed prosperity to grow and flourish, allowed even the weak to enjoy a measure of comfort, was an inconvenience for you. Personally. It constrained you, a bit, and for little gain you tore it down. It was the work of generations to build it. It will be the work of generations to rebuild something like it. But it will be generations before there is enough will to rebuild it.
Complain if you like, but you and yours are why there is no wall. You will get no sympathy for lack of protection. If you want sympathy and allies, start rebuilding the fucking wall.
