If you observe modern nation states, you ll quickly find that getting manufacturing or slave labour or textiles or oil or whatever you want in poor countries easily. production capacity is not what ends up giving you a leg up on the worldstate. its good to have of course, its a great way to catch up to first world nations, but what the first world has is a consumer base. You can generate insane amount of economic prosperity and economic activity through producing stuff and selling it on the international market of course, but all of this stuff depends on there being someone there to actually buy it from you. Both the US and Europe have giant consumer bases, thats the real commodity here, because its much harder to get that than just produce a lotta cheap stuff and sell it every year. If they shut the markets youre suddenly fucked.
But thats not even what the tradewar is about (this one). Its about china cheating by using their neighbours to pass off part of their production as domestic instead of chinese and therefore avoid tariffs on chinese products. Vietnam is a big offender. Almost half the export revenue china gained the last few years from the US, you can almost double, because theres hundreds of billions going through other SEAN ports that have less restrictions.
the second thing is the de minimus thing that makes shipping from china to your cheaper than having it produced by your neighbour and mailed. getting rid of this will choke out stuff like temu etc. that sell garbage with government subsidies to bankrupt any competitors and end up cornering the market that way.
If china is your enemy, why would you make them rich letting them leech off your consumer base when you know their economy would crumble if you stopped being stupid about this stuff?
tariffs on other nations where done to make sure countries get that they cant be "neutral", they either are not part of chinese export cheating or theyll get the stick.
