I think I might be a little bit of an anomaly, as I'm a bit older, in my 30's that is, and I never really gave a shit about idol culture or liked that kind of music. I got into vTubers around the big explosion in 2020, but was always a bit slow finding ones that actually kept me interested. Gura of course was immediately to my liking because I just found her voice relaxing and her content was just chill. Also enjoyed Nyanners for a while despite being one of many on this site telling her to stop nameposting and being a cringy idiot, but I laughed at a lot of her purile humor and dumbfuckery. A lot of other chuubas that have managed to hold my attention seem to be for the humor as well. Some of the Phase Connect talents, for example. Absolutely love Pippa, Tenma, Jelly, and Lumi, all because of their humor and irreverence. I used to like a lot of the talents over at VShojo but as time has gone on I watch less and less of their stuff. Some stuff that's all over the vTuber scene though I really find pushes me away... The yuribaiting, the "girlfriend experience" shit, the behind the scenes backstabbing a la the recent Sinder drama, fostering communities of absolute gooners, etc. So, /vt/, what draws you to vtubers, besides the cute anime girl schtick?

The humor, the gaming. That's all it was supposed to be for me but then
>>100534501 made me start looking for a few GFE adjacent vtubers, subbed to Fauna and Shiori.... that didn't end well. No issue with the yuribaiting usually but the amount of it Nerissa did was grating, OkaKoro is the standard. On the plus side I enjoy Miko and Peko, their comedic timing is the draw for me, don't care if they have BFs.

I've always just viewed them as normal streamers and watch ones with voices I like, and personalities I find entertaining.

>>100534480 I saw vtubers back then but instead of cringing I watched and I enjoyed. I had a background in anime and I had watched it all. Anime plot was turning to shit. vtubers were able to pull me out of anime to a certain extent because of how they had ties with being real people. Characters could be more fun to watch since there was more focus on it versus anime. I felt the effects of unicorn but always strove for a truth that was beyond that I believed certain types of people held. Like being a social tard wanting to be the master.

I mostly watch a few of the VShojo girls and some scattered indies, because I find them entertaining as well as their orbiters who frequently appear to collab and hang out. I'm not there every single stream or anything, and I'm not buying the merch aside from a couple of keychains to support smaller ones. They make for good second screen material while I'm doing other things I find a lot of the larger "culture" around vtubing off-putting - ESPECIALLY the Japanese idol corpo culture. Not to say there aren't creepy unicorns or GFE vtubers in the west, but it seems to be seriously concentrated over there. I understand liking cartoon boobs well enough, but never have I suffered any delusion that I'm in any kind of personal relationship with the lady drawing on the screen. Honestly I think I "discovered" vtubing completely by accident while looking for streamers playing a particular game on Twitch. Started watching a couple, and found out more from there.

>>100534480 Not reading all of that.
I am pushing 50, though, and I love vtubers. Watching gameplay bores the shit out of me though. I grew up on talk radio (was a dedicated Howard Stern fan before he turned into literally everything he used to rail against), and I love zatsu vtubers. It combines the chatter with anime: Perfect. If I can interract live that's even better, but VODs will do nicely too.

at least vtubers are stupid too so you can laugh at them and enjoy it more easily
but sometimes i find them really impressive and fascinating

>>100534480 I was already into idols, but my favorite content has always been the variety shows they did, vtubers gave me a similar vibe to that, I was never into watching streamers but when streaming became the new vtuber meta I was already into the ones doing that so I gave it a try and it was fun, also the YouTube streamers always had a different vibe from the ADHD mess that was anyone on twitch

Before vtubers were even a thing I hated streaming content, my only e xposure had been through my friend watching pokemon shiny hunters which I found cringe, and pewdiepie on South Park and I shared their ire and confusion. Then I saw Kizuna Ai. Not long after I found proto vshojo, ala Lewdcast. Then Myth debuted. I didn't start paying for any membership until Council, and not until a year into their debut. it's been a crazy half decade since I fell down this rabbit hole, and here I'll remain so long as there's yet to experience. FES, EN concert, con panels... Without vtubers Id have likely settled on a much less interactive hobby. Like many, I'm sure I'd still be watching seasonal anime or whatever. Now I never really have to wonder what to do when I have free time, I always know there's a stream on or soon
