Basically, we have 10 nerves in the head and one of them branches out into three parts and this is still not understood why, but when a nerve misfires the pain is extreme. It didn't happen often to my grandma, sometimes she'd go more than a couple of a years without experiencing a bout, but when it did happen it was heartbreaking. She'd cry from how painful it was. She said it felt like getting stabbed in the face.
There is no known cure, and it can be managed with some medicine, but shit sucks. I mean it used to be called the Suicide Disease due to how intense the pain is; the only comparable thing is shingles.
