Actually Japanese use 羽 (reads as wa, kanji for feathers) to counts birds. The only other animal that you count with 羽 are rabbits. The explanations for this grammar oddity are probably made up, but the important point is that Japanese will joke that rabbits are birds. So technically Pekora and Kiara can use this as a common point. Pekora could even join holotori and it wouldn't be more weird than a maid in umisea.
