I call bullshit on that one, my guess is that after 6 months her japanese had become good enough to make an understandable dialogue but extremely basic with no real way of actually holding up a decent conversation with someone. People at this point of learning a new language like to act cocky and think they're basically as good as natives and maybe she still holds up this belief she was that good at that time

Being fluent ≠ being done with your studies or even good. She was fluent in 6 months is what she meant. As in speaking with no hesitation or big mistake. It's especially achievable if you don't expand your vocabulary too much and keep talking about the same topics again and again.

Speaking Japanese (aka fluent) is fairly easy to get to, at least at a base level for every day conversations, Most specific words are nouns and can be inferred from context.

The hard part about japanese is switching to varying politeness levels and the kanji, both of which aren't relevant to "fluency"

She's definitely been lazy with her language learning. But her roommate lives in Tokyo which is VERY english-centric. You can live there fine with just english, so the "immersion" method doesn't totally work there

Japanese is one of the easiest languages to learn because of all the free shit out there to utilize. And learning how to speak it is easier than how to read. You can easily learn how to speak Japanese fluently in 6 months with immersive and diligent learning.

don't consider the entire population, just the people who have an interest in japanese culture. even among those people, the ability to learn japanese is rare. you're looking at it from a biased point of view. just the high time investment alone is enough to qualify the task as difficult. it doesn't matter if you can just "look up a guide" (it's not, there's no easy recipe to learning a language, you have to study hard and immerse). you have to put in hours and hours of immersion and study to internalize the language. it's the reason why most people who learn japanese that fast are almost always NEETs who have free time to study all day.

Japanese is easy, it just takes more time than your average language due to kanji but if kiara and other people like her learned just to speak then it's easier than romance languages and their thousand nonsense rules and conjugations
