Hospitals legally need to treat patients until they're stable, so illegals use the emergency department as a free clinic. Insurance has the same issue. Instead of assessing your risk like car insurance, everyone is equal, so the healthy and young subsidize the rest of the population. The cherry on top is the way insurance was legally mandated in this country for a while (you'd know this if you filed taxes).
The system would be fine if providers charged sane rates and medical insurance was optional, but that will never happen when some people can choose not to pay.
