It's basically an anti-sincerity sort of thing, a cultural undercurrent of American thought since the 70s and 80s. Sincerely engaging with optimism, cuteness, as embodied by idol songs, some people just can't handle it. It's too vulnerable, they see it as childish or unmanly, etc. It's a sort of postmodern viewpoint.
I understand how people arrive there, but I'd argue letting yourself enjoy whatever the fuck you want to without caring what anyone thinks is more masculine and mature than being obsessed with how your interests make you look to others. I'd unironically characterize his reaction as a little stunted and immature, but I won't condemn him for it. I've never watched the guy but he never struck me as a serious intellectual type living an examined life, he's just some normal joe.
