I'm trying to improve my 3D models of HoloEn, but I don't know if they are getting better or worse, what do you guys think?

It's getting worse. A more minimalist approach works better imo. Don't try to form complex facial features.
More like the left side of pic realted than the right side. Anime characters with detailed cheek bones look weird.

You somehow made them worse. The cheeks protrude way too much in the after versions. Kiara and Calli's noses and nose bridges are too big in both the before and after version.

I'd say the old versions look better generally.

With shading and the right angles, some of those models can look good, but the topology is kinda fucked and the hair is unusable.

Focus on strictly using quads. It won't look right when transformations are applied like in a game. See how topology is done in other models. That's how you can learn just like how a programmer can learn by reading code off github.

All of them except maybe Mori and Ina look worse, and the only reason they don't look worse is they were so utterly cursed to begin with. See generally >>1022203, of all the models in that image Gura (before) is easily the best mostly for that reason.

its kind of cheating, but i recommend using existing templates and assets and modifying them instead of doing it from scratch. i think zbrush has a default anime head template you can use, if you are using something else then idk

You do realize a quad is a tri with an extra point on the same flat plane essentially creating two tri's, right? OP having strictly quads grants FLEXIBILITY for his model. The game's rendering engine should (assuming the backend dev was competent in highschool math), automatically triangulate his model with ease. Else, you can easily triangulate in blender, 3ds max or whatever software you use.

fucking wrong, triangles glitch your model to shit if theres an excess of it. quads are the most stable and you should look to have only quads ever if you care able topology. good modelers literally go out of their way to make sure everything is a quad when they retoppo in maya

He's talking about the topology you retard, sure all faces are triangulated when being rendered on the GPU but when working with models in a 3D editing software you HAVE TO use quads to have control over the face/edge flows. Triangles are only acceptable on flat or static surface and should only be used to control how your topology flows.

The topology is fucked but nowadays thats easy to fix, You might just be punching up way too high for your skill level. I'd say redo them from scratch, at least the faces and hair but focus on nailing the facial anatomy, simpler is best

What I mean is, dont give up entirely on 3D but instead do some face studies on the side on paper and digital with a tablet and you'll see that improvement happens much faster, then you can go back to 3D sculpting with the anatomy and stylization knowledge.

Basically, you want to keep it consistently one shape, for simplicity when working. It makes zero sense to have a different shapes because it fucks with subdivisions, deformations, etc. You want consistency at that point because quads provide symmetry. Working with edge loops, deformations, and smoothing become /simpler/, and more /predictable/. If a modeler passes off their work to a game dev team, it can easily convert from quads to tris. A game doesn't work with quads because gpus work with triangles. They do that because rendering a triangle is just faster. Because of the properties of a quadrilateral, conversion is made simple. Once there, the programmer can use trigonometry in order to apply transformations between world space, object space, view space, and projection space. Also, after conversion, if needed, the dev team is also able to modify the amount of vertices rendered easily(LOD) to increase performance.

Just work with quads, bro

I think Ina's is close to good and Mori's could be fine with some tweaks. If you're inexperienced with something, I find it's usually better to omit as much detail as possible and/or go for a deliberately stylized feel, since details can quickly get out of control. On that basis, I would say to see how many of the contours you can get away with deleting. Maybe see if you can get some models ripped from other games and see what they do, or go for a early/mid-2000s style with fewer polygons and most of the detail presenting itself through textures.
