Easy question. They didn't, because if something doesn't fit the cult worldview you just don't acknowledge it as real. The only reason this is causing trouble now is because "release the list" is a core cult belief. It would have been less damaging to release it as is, be seen to be obviously on it, and make a lame excuse for why that's actually completely fine.
