As warrior your attack got boost by fuck tons but can't use magic at all (no scroll, no wand) but in exchange you can you martial arts skill something like lung, shield bash, round slash, etc. at the cost of hungriness.
While as a mage you can't equip any weapon or shield but you can learn magic and cast it through hungriness as well, and as a bonus iirc you can equip 2 rings which is really huge if you can find overpowered ring like regen per step.
