If someone tells you to do something that is beneficial for you then they've taken from you the ability to show the world you're making beneficial decisions for yourself.
Also, almost all authority is arbitrary in the modern world. Teachers are just average women, police are just average dudes, judges are weird perverts, etc. If you notice that when you're young, there's no unseeing it.
It's a case of placing a high value in how actions show who you are, more so than words or following the flock.
