It originated in carnivals where a boxer in a ring would call out for a challenger, if they managed to knock them down they would get a big money prize. A member of the audience would volunteer and they would be called up, and they would win quite easily, that audience member was a plant. Next they would call for a new challenger, a genuine audience member would volunteer, but they would have their ass beat and lose their money.
That's the origin of kayfabe, and from that to pro wrestling, tricking people into thinking there is some semblance of reality to it, to the kayfabe of politics, it has always been a gimmicky bait and switch.
So dropping kayfabe entirely is actually a good thing. That way their bait and switch scamming won't work as well. If you thought that it meant deep character acting then you were sorely mistaken, character acting is an art for the purpose of putting on a good performance for entertainment, and no ulterior motives. It's the opposite of kayfabe.
Kayfabe is and always has been a kind of scam.
