It's fine and sensible to not give a shit about the daily horserace obsessively tracking them, but ultimately you should want to see your oshi's numbers going up over time. She certainly wants that, it's just taboo to talk about in general because in a corpo that means it's a dick measuring contest / humblebragging / punch-down if it's a high number girl. For a low number girl to whine about numbers makes her look like a sore loser, sour grapes etc. there is literally no benefit to talking about them out loud. So they tell the fans to do be likewise.
However, that doesn't mean the numbers don't matter. Just there are only certain places and contexts they can be talked about without it being assumed to rubbing it in her face.
