But even then, people develop one-sided pseudoromantic relationships with non-idol musicians all the time. The line between idols are other entertainers can be really thin, specially when they try branching out with different talents.
As for the overuse of the idol label:
1) Hololive is nominally an idol company, and it's also the most succesful and enduring vtuber enterprise. People chasing vtuber success therefore try to imitate them.
2) Western cargo cult mentality means they use terms without undersranding them. This includea both western talents and audiences (including here). It's like a tween weeb using Japanese phrases and anime lines because someone much cooler said them.
