Honestly going back to the time period a lot of the rules make sense. Things like not eating pork (pork had a higher chance of parasites), a fuckton of rules on cleanliness, like being forced to ALWAYS wash your hands before you eat (which is why the Jews survived the plague so easily), etc.
I can't be assed to look it up but there was probably some kind of risk of infection back then or whatever if left alone and it probably stopped that.
The bible makes a lot of sense if you read it as guidelines to keep peasants from killing themselves with their own stupidity.
