That's literally exactly the way it was intended. Foreign things are foreign. A proper translation means that sometimes foreign things will have to be explained. But once you understand these foreign things you'll be able to enjoy foreign works as closely as possible to the way they were intended. It's amazing that retards are now actually advocating for wildly inaccurate 4Kids-tier hatchetjob "translations" because apparently people can't be allowed to learn about other cultures and properly contextualize things. Because wouldn't that be terrible?

I can see localisation making the things easier to understand and widening the appeal, but sometimes the unique quirks is the appeal.
I honestly prefer hundreds of tl notes like in a proper book. Thankfully, SG already had a tips system in the original, IIRC.
Unfortunately, people are chasing the money, foregoing uniqueness, never trying to market it instead (or knowing/assuming it would fail).

A Japanese work "was intended" to be enjoyed in Japan by a Japanese audience that speaks Japanese and is familiar with Japanese culture.
Localisation sands down a work, stripping it of all its subtext and meaning, until it can be enjoyed by basketball Americans who don't know Japan even exists.
If your opinion is "mass market appeal over all else" then that's fine, but don't go pretending that calling onigiri "jelly-filled donuts" allows the work's original intent to be preserved. It quite literally does the opposite. It strips everything out until even the most smooth-brained can comprehend it.

He is right though. Localization is better, as it's meant for a different audience in a different language. There's a lot of examples of bad localizations in this thread, which definitely exist, but it's fully possible to capture the essence of the original work without devolving to cringe. I'd take a dub of Okarun politely calling Momo Miss Ayase over listening to white people try to fit Japanese honorifics in English dialogue. The few times I tried watching a dub that did that, I had to stop watching out of pure cringe. Those are usually the same dubs that try to hire voice actresses that try to match Japanese pitch so you get a squad of unnaturally squeaky girls with virtually no distinction because the voice is already forced.

There are nuances to the localization vs translation argument and it's true you can't direct translate fucking everything or you get awkward stock lines like "I guess it can't be helped" or broken puns, but 99% of the translators that make the argument are just doing rewrites. Just look at the trails games taking a simple sentence with a few words and turning it into an entire meme paragraph.
