For white men it was always kind of accepted some of them are going to nerd out. They were bullied heavily, but it's not they couldn't find like-minded friends at least. For blacks, nerd things have additional stigma of "acting white".
Modern world is more permissible, which is good in its own way. That's why we even see western vtubers, - but notice how some .jp tubers are already past 40, shoujo manga paved women into nerd hobbies earlier there than in the west.
